Navigation menus often serve as simple guides, pointing users to different parts of a website or app. But what if navigation could do more? What if it could reveal content, engage users, and provide a richer experience without leaving the current page? Today, a shift in how navigation is used became clear through a hands-on experiment: transforming a static "What’s On" label into an expandable Rive component that opens up to show current productions directly within the navigation bar.
This post explores how this transformation was achieved, the challenges faced, and the benefits of using Rive’s state machines and layout triggers to create smooth, interactive navigation elements. It also highlights the idea that every navigation item can be a container for more information, waiting to be revealed through interaction.
